Hello , I have already installed oracle 9i on my machine. it is working fine.
Now am trying to install oracle 10g release 2.
while installation, first two processes i.e. instalation and setup comletes smoothly. But after that, the third stage i.e. configuration gives error.

I looked at the installation log file. In last lines, i found that, it is setting oracle 9i directory path as oracle_home and then it is failing..

i am attaching the log file with this message.

Is it the reason for installation problem that, i have installed 9i and now i am installing 10g?
Can i not install oracle 10g on machines where there is already oracle 9i installed?

Regards,
Dipali..

Sorry , forgot to attach log file..

I have tried to intall oracle 10g on other place than where oracle 9i is intalled.
Still it is taking oracle9i directory as it's home, and then it is failing (last lines of log file)

How can i specify different oracle home while installing oracle 10g s/w. What i was asked was just the path where to be installed the s/w, and i had specified it other than that of oracle 9i.

Please suggest the solution..

Dipali..

When you launch the installer it asks you for an Oracle home name and home directory. It suggests the value that it already knows (from a previous installation) but you must not follow its suggestion in this case.

Yes i am changing this both values..
Shall any change in registry help me?

I have seen value "C:\oracle\ora92" in registry editor -> oracle -> home0's oracle_home entry... and entry oracle_home_key is having value "Software\ORACLE\HOME0".

Shall i change this values, make oracle_home entry blank? will this solve the problem?

I got that, by deinstalling all oracle products and deleting every entry of this registy's oracle's folder, i can successfully insall oracle 10g and then 9i. But i want to go to root of the problem and solve it. Please help..

Thanks and Regards,
Dipali.

10g is not the HOME part. Oracle registry directory structure has changed.

The root cause is likely yuo tought you have changed of home but you actually had not.
OUI has strange behaviour, if you change home directory then go back to home name then home directory changes back to the previous value.

Michel

Yes,
under oracle in registry editor, directory is created with name KEY_OraDb1g_home2, which contains entry for "ORACLE_HOME" and it's value is corretct (path to oracle 10g direcotry sturcture, i.e. D:\Dipali\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_2).

But the oracle 10g installation was not successfully completed.

However, i get the oracle 10g's entries (of each try i did) in Start-> program files. But cannot create database or do nothing.

Regards,
Dipali..

Right Taj,

But the thing i was facing was..
--> i had oracle 9i installed on my pc ,which was working fine.
Then i need to install oracle 10g. But oracle 10g's installaton was giving errors.. (i had attached the log file in previous message of this thread).

My seniors told that, if there is already 9i, first you have to remove it, then install oracle 10g, then again install 9i..
I felt this as not the solution of the problem but the way to avoid the problem. That was like, "you know , you will get problem if try to do that, then don't just do that, instade of trying to solve that"
So i posted the problem over here. Michel helped me a lot yesterday. But Still i haven't get the solution. Still i am searching for it.

What i did today, is :
--> I deinstalled all the oracles (working oracle 9i, and partially installed oracle 10g(unsuccessful). Remove directory structures related to oracle, and remove registry entries.
-->Then i installed oracle 10g, created database.
-->Then installed oracle 9i.

I had to go by that way, what i didn't want.
Still looking for the reason and solution of that problem.

Regards,
Dipali.

No deepali,
it is not like that.

Micheal is my senior and i always respecting him.
it is my dream to work with as much as possible with every oracle release.

For about your problem...
Just specify different oracle home during installation will work, there is not neccessary to first install 10g then 9i.

just try again hope this time you can do it.

[1] You can install 10g after installation of 9i
[2] As per your log I can know you are installing on Windows based O/S now my question is ...
Is it XP? If your answer is yes .. Then Try to find out which patch or service pack you required to upgrade your windows-XP so that you can install oracle 10g properly.

Other wise you already got answer
Michel said in its first post of this thread.
>>You can install it but in a different home.

Just think how you can upgrade 9i DB to 10g on same server?
Ask your senior is it possible .... Very Happy

Thanks Sunil, for the information.. Smile

Yes, my OS is XP.

So, the steps i did follow at last were proper.
Directly i cannot install oracle 10g after installing oracle 9i.

And at last the moral of story is:
On windows XP, we cannot install oracle 10g if we already have installed oracle 9i. OS needs some upgradation.. Hmmm..

Thanks.

And about asking to seniors..
Dear, They are my seniors. I cannot argue with them or ask them any question to check their knowledge or to make them feel their _______. Afterall, i want to be a part of the company for long period and need good promotions na.. Wink Smile

Anyways,
Thanks and Regards..

hi dipali,

This is shriganesh , the new member to this forum. I understand from your message that you are trying to install oracle 10g. I am also trying to do the same on Windows xp professional 32 bit, but it is giving me an error in the beginning stage like 'Java Virtual Machine Launcher' - Fatal Exception occurred. Program will exit. I uninstalled all the available java from my system , but still the error is coming. What are the prerequisites to install oracle 10g. Why it is not as easy as other versions? In the forum can anybody tell the procedure to do the same?
Thanks in advance.
