Hi!

I need to move a 8.1 Database from one server to another server within the same domain while upgrading to 10g.

Can any one verify, whether, what I am planning is correct?

Target Database:

Install software and create Database.
Use Datapump and import from source DB.

or

Upgrade the source DB to 10g and take the template of the same.
Just clone the Database of source to get the target.

which one should I do?

You should NOT touch the 8i DB.
If it is left alone, you'll always have a fallback capability.

You can not use datapump, because it did not exist in 8i.

Hello,

NEVER touch your working DB.

What you have to do is look for the tablespaces and their size in the old server (dba_data_files).

Recreate the same tablespaces with greater sizes (or same, depending on free space) on the new server.

Do a full import.

I will have to move two databases from one windows server to another windows server within the same domain.

Are there any documentation with step by step procedure?

Hi man,

A working oracle environment is SACRED and must not be touched. So no need for any upgrade.

If your original DB was on 7 then you should have migrated it to oracle8 first then oracle10g. (please correct me if am mistaken)

IF you have backup of the 8i databse then restore it on oracle 10g database and then start it up.

No it is not working.

Oracle 8i database backup you can't restore and recover in oracle 10g database.
