here are some steps to change the archivelog destination Using spfile .

Please correct me if i am wrong somewhere.

alter system set log_archive_dest_1='location=/tmp' ;

shu
startup

can anybody tell me, do i need to backup my old archivelogs to new destiantion before changing destination?

Changing the archive log location is a dynamic procedure, no restart is required.

You need to backup your old archive log destination for backup & recovery purposes.
