very confusing situation [message #364386]

Hi everybody.

I read a lot about pfile, spfile and init.ora but im still confused, I have an XE oracle Database, which I am trying to connect to it using sqlplus* but im getting this funny ORA-27037 each time i run the startup coommand.

here is what i have in my folders:

in here : /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/dbs
I have these: hc_XE.dat, init.ora, lkXE, orapwXE, spfileXE.ora

I dun have pfile or somethign like that. I really need kind of serious help from the scratch. please help me out.

ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
 *Cause:  stat system call returned an error, additional information
          indicates which function encountered the error
 *Action: check errno

What is the relation with pfile, spfile, init.ora?

Use SQL*Plus and copy and paste your session.

Before read OraFAQ Forum Guide, especially "How to format your post?" section.
Make sure that lines of code do not exceed 80 characters when you format.
Indent the code (See SQL Formatter) and use code tags.
Use the "Preview Message" button to verify.

im getting this error

SQL> conn /as sysdba
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> startup
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/dbs/initHR.ora'
