Hi,

I've to upgrade a 10gR1 databases to 10gR2. The database is a huge one.

I was wondering if this upgrade would require an import/export of the databases, or if it just requires an upgrade of the RDBMS and is like a patch install??

basically i wanted to know as to what will be the overhead in doing such a thing??

please reply if anyone of you have already faced a similar situation.

No it can be done with dbua.
See upgrade/migration guide.

No it can't be done like that.

And if you just look at the topic that what was created before you it is named "Patch 10.1 to 10.2 - just an RDBMS upgrade or import/export required?" you'd have your answer without posting.

thanks Michel,
actually i read the related posts but din really gain that much info from them.
actually we have the option of upgrading to 10gR2 or 11g and i went throught the post for that as well.. it was very educative..
i just wanted to take as many feedbacks as possible as i am very very new to this field(just 3 months) and that confidence in upgrading a huge database like ours is just not coming. i want to be 100% sure of what to be done and how??

and where can i find upgrade/migration guide?

i also wanted to know if upgrading the DB to a newer version may lead to compatibility issues for applications who have written their pl/sql code according to previous versions.

i mean, will upgrading my DB from 10Gr1 to 10Gr2 lead to any backward compatibility issues?

In syntax, no (unless you use exotic and non supported one).
In performances, maybe.
You have to make deep tests before upgrading production.

Yes, if you set compatibility parameter to 10.1 and never set it to 10.2 (or never not set it).
You then just have to restore the previous binaries.

Our 10GR1Database is on a 32 bit, Red Hat Linux Box. Some DBA s suggest that with 10GR2 a better option would be to go for a 64bit, SUSA Linux Box.
I am not sure, how it will impact the performance.
As i have said earlier, our database is a huge one and any types of risks are not affordable.

Will it be fine to upgrade the Oracle version alone (keeping the hardware as it is ,i.e., 32 bit - red hat linux)?
or is it better to go for a hardware and OS upgrade as well?


Can anyone suggest something? Confused

You have to test it.
The answer depends on your environment, hardware, applications, and so on.

ya right.. but what can be the risks involved?
can i expect any major issues?

and is there a order that i should follow? i mean what should be upgraded first - hardware or Oracle?

is it fine if i can test 10gR2 on my current box and later turn to 64 bit box?

what do you suggest?

ok.. so the hardware and linux versions are still the same. No one is touching that for now.

But Now i am in a fix whether to go for oracle versions 10.2.0.1 or 10.2.0.3 ...

can anyone suggest?

as far as i know, the latter has a patch upgraded on the 10gR2 version on it.. actually i am very new to this field so just wanted your opinions....

Of course the latest patchset should be better as it fixes bugs in the previous ones.

There is NO patch to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2, they are 2 different versions.
You have to download 10.2 then migrate your database following the steps detailed in documentation.
