How do you patch several databases in intermediate stages? [message #386569]

Hi,

I'm about to do an upgrade/patch of several databases. I'd like to migrate them one at a time from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4. However the notes indicate that you must apply the patch to an existing directory. Is there any way of copying the existing directory to another one and apply the patch to that new directory. Thanks in advance.

While Doing patch installaion; Oracle Home should be same NOT Different.

Not sure what you mean here.

You will be first patching the Oracle Home and do something to
the database (run catupgrd.sql)
If there are multiple ORACLE_HOME, patch do it multiple times.
If there are multiple databases in the same ORACLE_HOME,
first patch, and run catupgrd.sql on each database.

Take a backup of ORACLE_HOME and database before doing anything.

Hi,

It's the latter. That is, I have multiple databases in the same ORACLE_HOME. I want to keep one database at the initial patch level but I want to take another database to the next patch level. Only when I am ok with the one at the latest patch level will I then do the other one. Is there any way of putting the database being patched into it's own ORACLE_HOME?

Yes - as already stated.

If your current Oracle_Home is /oracle/oracle10201 (for example)

Create a new directory/mount point ... /oracle/oracle10204 ... install Oracle there and patch it up to the correct level.

Then just restart the databases under the new Oracle_Home as you are ready for them (move s/pfile to the new location - set the environment to start it up - change oratab).

Then start the database and run the upgrade scripts (such as catupgrd.sq).

Simple and easy.
