Hi,
Last night our oracle server was improperly shutdown due to which now the Database instance is down as well as Agent connection to instance. This is why we are unable to connect to database 'orcl'. We tried using enterprise manager but it requires OS password and on providing it with OS passward it says Invalid user name and password. We have also tried using sqlplus 'STARTUP' (conn sys/pass @orcl as sysdba) using login 'sys' as sysdba but it says:
ERROR:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect
descriptor
Any resolution other than reinstallation of OS or Oracle?

I tried that but when I tries to login as sysdba using
conn sys/password @orcl using sysdba
it states:

ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error

Actually I started this service 'OracleserviceORCL' which was set automatic but some how was not started. So after started it my attempt to connect as sysdba was successfull. heres the log including a new error while trying 'STARTUP'
SQL> conn sys/password as sysdba
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 523108352 bytes
Fixed Size 1334292 bytes
Variable Size 377488364 bytes
Database Buffers 138412032 bytes
Redo Buffers 5873664 bytes
Database mounted.

Not really, since you have to specify it during the database creation, so there is no way anyone other than the person who installed the database really knows.
The directory itself is called "bdump" in maybe 80% of cases, and is either somewhere where the datafiles are or somewhere where the Oracle installation is.

okay.
when I give that command it says 'Oracle is not available'
SQL> conn sys/cure2000 @orcl as sysdba
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> sho parameter background_dump_dest
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available

My post is a reply for you to find the alert log location...And as you found it and posted some content of the file ..
And it is showing some ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [4194], [6], [11], [], [], [], [], []
Which is an internal error for which you need to contact your Oracle support.
