Hi,

Just wanted to get your ideas we have trialled a couple of bits of software for monitoring performance of the database and sql queries running against it and wondered if any one had any recommendations for any pieces of software such as Spotlight on Oracle, we do not have the option to go to Enterprise edition and therefore can't use the Statistics and Tuning Packs and want something more automated than STATSPACK and basic system performance stats.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I've seen Quest's Spotlight; didn't use it, though, but I remember it looked very nice and was quite colorful. So, even though it doesn't do what you need, you might enjoy having it on the screen /forum/fa/1587/0/

Hi,
I suggest you try Nagios with a check_oracle_health plugin to monitor a variety of oracle database metrics. Nagios+Cacti is a free graphing solution.

Monitor Oracle Performance? Hmm, I've used OEM (9i) & DBControl (10g) for finding top_SQL, and it's all of purpose.

One of tool as dbtop I've used, too.

However, I've command console to monitor DB by my scripts or collection scripts.

I vote for GRID control. DBControl for 10g is inferior to Grid Control for 10g. 11g DBControl is an improvement on 10g's, but I still prefer GRID.

With grid, you'll need to define a repository (in a licensed database.) If you are lucky enough to have a couple of RAC Clusters, you can make the repository highly available by putting the repos there.

Now you only need a server for the Oracle Management Server (note - it will conflict with ASM.) To make OMS highly available, you need a 'shared directory'.

Ooops. You'll need the Oracle Agent on each node with databases to be managed. Install the agent to a different Oracle home.

Summary: with RAC for Repository, and 2 off the shelf linux boxes, middle tier and database tier will be HIGHLY AVAILABLE. The best practice for PRODUCTION environments.

(Also have Spotlight for Oracle and Spotlight for RAC. Fun to look at. Nice 'replay' function as well. Past that, gimme grid control!)
